ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis)  The well-developed scientific discipline that focuses on the analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of social and other environmental modifications to produce meaningful changes in human behavior.

ABLS (Assessment of Basic Language Skills)  Often pronounced “ables” ABLS is an educational tool used frequently with ABA to measure the basic linguistic and functional skills of an individual with developmental delays or disabilities

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) A group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness and can also have additional problems such as sleep and anxiety disorders.

ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition)  The way autism impacts each individual is unique, ASC is used to describe the range of the autism spectrum, including Asperger’s Syndrome.

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)  A condition that affects social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour – a range of educational and behaviural support programmes can help with the condition.

BACB (Behavior Analysis Certification Board)  A non-profit corporation meeting professional credentialing needs indentified by behaviour analysts, governments, and service users. The BACB adheres to international standards.

BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)  Graduate-level certification in behaviour analysis. Professionals who are certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who provide behaviour-analytic services.

DBS (Disclosure and Barring Services Checks) to help employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups. It replaces Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

TTT (Team-Tech Training) provided to staff to show restraint rather than apply it. To promote the least intrusive positive handling strategy with an emphasis and preference for the use of verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques.

EHCP (Education Health and Care Plan)  A legal document which sets out a description of a child’s needs, and what needs to be done to meet those needs by education, health and social care.

PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) The aim is to teach individuals new behaviours through positive methods to enable them to achieve personal goals. Effective PBS aims to prevent further episodes of challenging behaviour.

VB and AVB (Verbal Behaviour and Applied Verbal Behaviour)  VB encompasses what is traditionally called language, linguistic and speech. AVB is a programme part of ABA that focuses on teaching communcation via langauge by using effective teaching strategies.

VB-MAPP (Verbal Behaviour Milestones Assessment and Placement Program)  The VB-MAPP is based on B.F. Skinner’s (1957) analysis of verbal behaviour, established developmental milestones, and research from the field of behaviour analysis.
